Welcome to the "Do the Math" Challenge Cambridge blog!

From October 4-8, 2010, several members of the Cambridge community will be eating from a typical food hamper in order to draw attention to poverty in our community and what many people on social assistance experience on a regular basis. This is in support of the Put Food in the Budget Campaign, which is calling for a $100 Healthy Food Suppliment in Ontario to support the health and well being of all Ontarians.

Follow along as the participants share their thoughts.

Welcome to the Do the Math Challenge Cambridge!

From October 4-8th, members of the Cambridge community will be undertaking the “Do the Math Challenge” by eating from a typical food bank hamper in order to draw attention to hunger and poverty. Participants will experience first hand what it is like to live on a diet that many people on social assistance experience regularly. This is to draw attention to the provinvce-wide Put Food in the Budget Campaign, calling for a $100 Healthy Food Suppliment.

People representing a broad cross-section of our community, including: business, faith community, nonprofit sector, health care, education, and local government, will be participating.

On the 4th, they will go to the food bank and receive their food for the next 5 days. They have been instructed to eat only from this hamper and limited quantities of  5 pantry items. Participants have been encouraged to record their thoughts, observations and send these as well as photos to be posted on our Do the Math Challenge Cambridge blog.  On October 8th, participants will gather to wrap-up the challenge and share their thoughts and reflections.
We hope you can follow along as members of our community undertake this challenge.
On October 1st, the participants will be announced... stay tuned!

  1. Welcome to the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank, thanks so much to Kevin & Jean for coming in to pick up their food already this morning. We truly appreciate all those who are taking part in this. Have a great day.

  2. Was really an education to see the food bank in action. Brought home the food. Had soup and a bun for dinner. My nine year old (Jordan) had a peanut butter sandwich. We already are trying to plan what to eat when so we can stretch the items. My husband is still hungry and dinner is over. He's calling it Meatless Monday. Have a feeling tomorrow is going to be Tuna Tuesday. It takes creativity. Plato was right - Necessity... mother of invention.
